We've said it before and we'll say it again: email is not dead. This is one of my favorite topics to talk about because the death of email was predicted 15-20 years ago.
If you've been around for a few years, you may recall that Myspace and Facebook were supposed to kill email. Before that, AOL Instant Messenger was the first serious contender to take over email's supremacy.
Over the years, countless social media platforms came and went envisioned a world where ALL communication would funnel through their platforms. We all know how that turned out.
What Did We Learn?
Email is very resilient. It’s very agnostic. It’s the one channel I would say that’s not really controlled by any business. It’s kind of similar to SMS (sending promotional messages using text messages. SMS and email are the most agnostic channels we have.
The reason social media didn't spell the death of email marketing is this: Social media is too, well "social." Professionals can't spend all their time on Instagram and Facebook while they're supposed to be working, right?
True, we do have other channels that are considered more professional. Linkedin is a professional channel even though it’s a social channel. That said, it still doesn't give brands the same reach as email marketing.
Email Marketing Is Stronger Than Ever
Email is a professional channel. We use email everywhere. Email is not dead.
Even with the rise of conversational marketing, Facebook Messenger and Slack, email is as relevant as it was in 1995.
That said, there have been some changes. You can't use the "spray and pray" method. You can't buy a list of emails and blast your newsletter to it without asking permission.
These are not a part of legitimate email marketing in 2020—otherwise you can get in a lot of trouble.
Email marketing today is much smarter. it’s connected. You have CRMs, you’re connected to social media, you’re connected to all your marketing tech stacks.
Email is basically the center of it all and once you have the email address you can market as much as you want to. This is the thing a lot of people and brands don’t understand, especially when it comes to platforms like Facebook where they want to charge you for every "send." Email allows you to send as much as you want, plus it’s relatively cheap.
Still: it’s in your best interest to be strategic.
For all that said email is dead, here we are in 2020 and it’s still alive. Long live email.
